We chose to write a poem about our athletics day. We used figurative and descriptive language to appeal to my audience.

WALT: use figurative and descriptive language to recount our athletics day
High jump

It was my turn to jump
I ran my hardest
As I was running up
I nervously thought
I would miss the jump
But no, I was thinking wrong
I jumped over the pole
Boom! Bang!
I landed on the mat
Wow! I made it over.

My second jump now
I’m up next……
Gritting my teeth, walking, focussing
The teacher put it up a notch
It was at 1.10
My name got called out
“Toko,” Whaea Rosina said
I was running, running,...
I jumped in the air...
Smack!  I landed
“ Ohh yee-ah! I made that jump ”
I was so ecstatic I made that jump.

The bar went up 5 more centimetre’s
Oh man! I don’t know if can make this jump

Trying my hardest to make the jump
I felt like I was flying in the air
Bang!
I landed.  God damn!......
I didn’t make it that time.
It was my second run
my hardest I jumped and I knocked the bar off “Ohh no!”
I should’ve kicked my legs up
I knew as I jumped in the air I forgot to lift  up  my  legs
that’s why it fell off.

Next time!

This is my report writing about the earthquake in Caterbury. My writing shows the different features of a report writing that has classification, the description and a conclusion.

2010 Canterbury Earthquake…

The 2010 Canterbury earthquake struck the South Island of New Zealand with a magnitude of 7.1 on 4 September 2010.

The main shock on 4 September caused widespread damage and several power outages, particularly in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand's second largest city.

There were major suffering and deaths reported in this quake. One person died of a heart attack suffered during the quake, although this could not be directly linked to the earthquake.Despite the damage, there were few serious injuries in residential houses. 185* people died and several thousand were injured in the second earthquake .

In the first eighty years of European settlement in Christchurch (1850–1930), four earthquakes caused significant damage.
The last earthquake was based near Darfield, about 40 kms west of Christchurch. Many buildings were damaged. Darfield town is named after the Darfield earthquake one of the strongest measured quakes in the Canterbury plains. The worst damage was suffered by older (mainly pre-1940s) buildings constructed of brick and masonry, and lacking adequate reinforcement.

In the next 10 years, computers will be old and obsolete.  Desktops and laptops too, have already begun to be put into dusty cupboard or stored away in rooms.    The one and only thing that will remain will be the smartphone.

Just think what it would be like if your smartphone was your only computer. You would always have your computer with you.   All of your documents, photos, games, your apps, would always be in your pocket, available at any time.

You wouldn’t need a big screen, a keyboard and mouse, and some nice speakers, now you just put your smartphone into a docking station. You could have a docking station at home, in the office, at the airport, and they even have these dotted around town for your use.

I believe the smartphone will be the computer we have to keep us connected with our whanau. It will be used for almost everything we will need to have other than a wallet. You could use your smartphone as a passport, or as a credit card. Your smartphone could track your movements, and to pass the information off quicker than if we were to get it there.
However, smartphones aren’t going to kill laptops or desktops any time soon. But they will be smaller. We still need to communicate.
